original art works

artist statement, march 2011

"The role of personal perpective in how we understand the world is central to my practice. I use a combination of found and personal photographic memorabilia as the starting point. The images I develop concern familiarly uncomfortable social interactions, halting polite conversations and the reassuring yet claustrophobic. My aim is to reveal the shared humanity in the cognitive isolation of individual experience.

Working small increases the intensity of the process, both of creating and observing, bringing an intimacy which is perhaps partly voyeuristic. The loose reworking of these chosen images is intended as a deliberate point of access for the viewer; to prompt their own memories. Each of the works becomes a tale in its own right, but together these are presented as a compound narrative. The result is both an autobiographical and generic commentary on suburban British life."
